It is supposed to be a historical site; the battleground of Mat Salleh at Kg Inanam Laut, Kota Kinabalu, but why is it allowed to be cut by some unconcerned developer? According to Ijam, a viallage boy the developer overshot his excavation works.
What used to be an important communication route is now a milky dirty old and dead-end river. The river at Kg Inanam Laut used to be the battleground of Mat Salleh and and his followers with the British colonial masters and they chased him after he burned down Jesselton and Gaya Island. It should be a historical river but it is not and a place for rubbish.
This is the only cannon found at the site on the hill at Kg Inanam Laut what used to be a fort used by Mat Salleh to fight the British administration. Kg Inanam Laut is where his mother comes from. This cannon found at a private land now lies in one of the houses in the village and the person who had found it had given strict instruction not to sell it even when the Muzium representatives came calling in.
The second storytelling was done on March 24, 2010 and 'Tagal' was what the students loved most that could inspire them to do their animation.
Jesselton after 1911 had changed so much. The railway line to Tg Lipat has been replaced by highway, flyovers and traffic lights. 99 years after 1911 saw Jesselton becoming a City that is serviced by an international airport and a Port Hub at Sepanggar.
KYS Animation House invited the PSMCS to do a Storytelling on March 2, 2010. PSMCS President, Datuk Hj Light Nanis did the Storytelling to the future animators to inspire them on the legends, stories and history of Sabah. They felt inspired and liked the Storytelling as there are not many people who can do the Storytelling.
What is so special about Kota Kinabalu,formerly known as Jesselton in 1911? There used to be a railway line right up to Tg Lipat where the Port now lies from Tenom, a district in the Interior Residency of Sabah, formerly North Borneo.
PSMCS made a courtesy call to the Director of Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka Sabah on March 17,2010. DBP Sabah plans to hold a Novel Competition on History and PSMCS is to be invited as member of the Organizing Committee.
The Kawang War called 'Amok' happened well before Mat Salleh burned down Jesselton on 1897, a time difference of about 12 years in 1885, again the result of a misunderstanding between the local Bajau Community and the British Chartered Company Resident and the Police Chief De Fontaine. 1885 therefore was the earliest time that the local community had risen against the British Chartered Company who had wanted to catch the Murut Chief in Tenom but was unsuccessful.
If you drive just a few kilometers south towards Papar from Kota Kinabalu City you will reach a small town called Kawang and there lies the De Fontaine Memorial. De Fontaine was the Police Chief during the British Chartered Company of North Borneo who came with the Resident to catch the Murut Chief in Tenom. They stopped in Kawang to request for 20 additional people which was misunderstood as a form of slavery by the local Bajau Community. What transpired was the fighting between the British police force assisted by the Sikh policemen and the Bajau community and 7 of them were killed. This memorial marked the encounter De Fontaine and entourage with the local community at a site where there was a mango tree.
Some of the houses and buildings at Kinarut Town are worth preserving like the 'Kapitan Cina' House or the former Government Department buildings including the former police station. Kinarut Town could be turn into a historical township.
Kinarut is a small town in the Papar District. Kinarut is busy on every Saturday when there is a Tamu. It is at this place that you can get river or fresh water fishes like 'Pelian', but they are not cheap selling at RM35/kg. Kinarut started as a Train Station Town and a new Train Station had been completed, just waiting for the new but overdue railway tracks to be completed.
Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia Cawangan Sabah President delivered a Talk on Historical Tourism at the School Of Social Science of the University Malaysia Sabah on February 25, 2010 attended by the Lecturers and undergraduates of History and it was a Talk well received as the topic is something that they had not thought about before especially turning historical sites into income generating products.
